John Bowen

John Bowen is a Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of York. He joined The Dickens Project in 1996, and has since become involved with The Friends of the Dickens Project. He is also the President of the worldwide Dickens Fellowship and a member of the Advisory Board of the Clarendon Edition to the Works of Charles Dickens. He has written extensively on Dickens and the Victorian novel, authoring Other Dickens: Pickwick to Chuzzlewit and editing the Penguin edition of Dicken’s Barnaby Rudge. John delivered the final lecture, “Zombie and Son,” at the 2016 Dickens Universe. When asked what he most enjoys about being involved with The Dickens Project, he responded, “I love its democracy and good cheer—the fact that one can share one’s knowledge and enthusiasm and excitement about Dickens with so many different people, of all different sorts and ages. And to do so in such beautiful surroundings is an added bonus.”
