The Dickens Project fosters a diverse and inclusive literary community, one that encourages discussion, intellectual curiosity, and the formation of lasting friendships.
As one Road Scholar put it, the Dickens Universe offers an “intensive examination of the selected book, with lectures by first-class scholars and the exchange of opinions with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. All this makes the week an intellectual feast. I wish the rest of my life offered as rich an experience.”
Creating unique educational experiences with programs that inspire and support learning at every level is at the heart of what we do.
High School Students
Each year, The Dickens Projects hosts writing retreats for high school students to come together and immerse themselves in a world of Victorian literature. The Dickens Day of Writing is an excellent way for students to engage with a text, receive mentorship, and see their writing published.
Teachers & Instructors
The Dickens Projects offers many opportunities for Teachers and Instructors to not only further their own love of Dickens but also explore new ways to bring Victorian literature into the classroom.
Road Scholars
Road Scholar, a nonprofit leader in lifelong learning since 1975, inspires adults to explore the world through transformative educational travel. Since 2002, Road Scholars have joined the renowned Dickens Universe where attendees are fully integrated with fellow Universe participants.
Independent Scholars
In 2026, we are launching a new program for independent scholars, a Victorian Studies Writing Retreat. More information is coming soon.

Our Mutual Friend: The Scholarly Pages
In 1998 the BBC approached the Dickens Project about creating an electronic archival resource that would complement the BBC’s film adaptation of Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend. Our aim was to provide “a virtually inexhaustible storehouse of information for those who wish to explore in depth the complicated ‘web’ of this dense but powerful novel.”
