McGee is a “Little Dickens”

McGee and Sharon“I’m a Little Dickens” so applies to McGee. He came into my life as a wee pup during the COVID shutdown and has been glued to my side ever since. I never thought I would be raising a fictive ‘toddler’ again! He hates to be left alone, in part because that is a trait of his breed and in part exacerbated by his early years with mostly me for company during the lockdown. He is the perfect doorbell—he barks when anyone gets close to our door.  Fortunately, he loves the people and other dogs in my condo building and at our local doggy daycare, so I can get to Santa Cruz for the Universe and make overseas trips.

McGee and I walk a lot, and we recently took a walking tour of Denver arranged by my sister, Josie Jordan (John’s sister-in-law, Bill Jordan’s wife, and my introduction to the Universe; but I knew her first!) on one of her visits here. McGee adores Josie and follows her around and sulks at the door when she leaves. On our return from the walking tour on our local mall shuttle, McGee sat on my lap and was, as they say, a “magnet” for all riders to start a conversation.

McGee the little DickensThe Old Curiosity Shop is a perfect read for those with pets, especially dogs. Phiz’s illustration of Jerry and his dancing dogs and Charles Green’s depiction of the dog troupe performing for Nell fit right into McGee’s lineage. He is a Havanese—bred in Cuba centuries ago, supposedly to be circus performers. I can attest to his ability to stand on his hind legs and look cute—usually asking for more attention.

McGee also brings to mind Barnaby Rudge’s raven Grip and the close bond they had. I find myself being unconsciously aware of McGee’s location or his absence when he is in another room. He is a devoted companion, and I am grateful for his company.
