Attending the Universe for Undergraduate Credit
LIT 112C (UCSC Summer Session, Special Program)
LIT 112C is a unique course offered during UCSC’s Summer Session, wherein students can earn 5 units to fulfill the Canons or Histories critical approach requirement for Literature majors, and the Textual Analysis general education requirement for all UCSC students. Popularly dubbed an “intellectual summer camp,” the Universe is an immersive experience. Students will dance, dine, and socialize alongside university faculty, graduate students, and Road Scholars, whilst simultaneously keeping up with a rigorous academic schedule by attending general lectures led by world-renowned plenary lecturers, in addition to attending undergraduate-exclusive discussion sections. Undergraduates must register for this course through UCSC Summer Session. Registration directions for both UCSC and non-UCSC students are available on the Summer Session website. See Literature courses listed on the Literature summer course page.

Scholarships for Community College Students
Realizing the importance of community colleges in the California higher education system, the Dickens Project offers scholarships that sponsor students from California community colleges to attend the Dickens Universe. This summer’s dates are July 20-26, 2025. This summer, we will focus on one of Dickens’s lesser-known novels, The Old Curiosity Shop. Currently, the Project offers up to three scholarships per year. The scholarship award includes the cost of attending the conference and enrollment and registration fees. In addition to the general program of Universe events, the scholarship recipient attends the undergraduate seminar, which meets daily Monday through Thursday during Universe week. The scholarship recipient can receive 5 UC quarter units of credit through UCSC’s Summer Session (upon completion of course assignments).
