Dickens Universe Graduate Students

Undergrads & Graduate Students

Undergrad Course: LIT 112C

LIT 112C, offered during UCSC’s Summer Session, awards 5 units fulfilling Literature majors’ critical approach requirement or general education for all students. Known as an “intellectual summer camp,” students engage in rigorous academic lectures, undergraduate discussion sections, and social activities with faculty, graduate students, and Road Scholars.

Undergrad Literature Courses

Enroll in courses at UC Santa Cruz taught by Dr. Renée Fox, Associate Professor of Literature, Jordan-Stern Chair for Dickens and Nineteenth-Century Studies, Co-Director of The Dickens Project, and expert in Monsters Studies, along with other distinguished faculty from the Literature Department.

Community College Scholarship Program

The Dickens Project offers up to three scholarships annually to California community college students to attend the Dickens Universe. The scholarship covers conference attendance, enrollment, and registration fees. Recipients can earn 5 UC quarter units of credit through UCSC’s Summer Session upon completing course assignments.

Graduate Student Dickens Universe Experience

Graduate students at the Dickens Universe can choose from workshops on active listening, pedagogy, presentation, publication, writing, team-teaching, and professional seminars, gaining skills, mentorship, and collaboration to prepare for academic careers. Participation requires university nomination.

Graduate Winter Conference

During the Dickens Universe, faculty present their research to graduate students. In contrast, the graduate student winter conference allows graduate students to present their work to faculty. Each student is paired with a faculty member from a different university for one-on-one feedback. The conference fosters continued scholarly dialogue, collaboration, and development of public speaking and teaching skills through presentations to peers and faculty.

Graduate Student Travel Grant Program

Graduate travel grants of up to $300 support research-related travel to Dickens Project events in 2025-2026. Awards prioritize students attending the Dickens Universe or Winter Conference and require enrollment at a consortium institution.
