Dickens and Satire by Clive Johnson
As part of our Summer Pickwick series we were honoured to host Dickens and Satire by Clive Johnson on Saturday June 8th at 9AM PDT 2024.
Clive Johnson has taught English at secondary schools in Kent and as a university lecturer at the University of Kent at Canterbury. He has a PhD in the comic writing of Charles Dickens. Clive has been a councilor on his local authority, Medway Council, where he led for the Labour Party on children’s services. Clive also stood for parliament in 2019. Clive’s PhD explored Dickens and satire, so it is a short step from satire to politics!

Recommended Edition: We recommend exploring The Charles Dickens Illustrated Gallery to explore the original illustrations (and later edition illustrations).

The Santa Cruz Pickwick (Book) Club, a branch of the Dickens Fellowship, is a community of local bookworms, students, and teachers who meet monthly to discuss a nineteenth-century novel. The Santa Cruz Public Libraries provide support for the reading group.
