Please Sir, Can We Have Some More?

We want to thank everyone who has given in the past and ask that you please consider increasing your contribution this year.

The Project’s annual Dickens Universe gathering is a unique event that brings together scholars, teachers, graduate students, undergraduates, high school students, and members of the general public. It is a model of collaborative scholarship and public outreach. For over 30 years, the Dickens Project has been the principal center for teaching and research on Dickens in North America. The Project has grown from its modest beginnings as a UC research group to its current size of over forty colleges and  universities from around the world.

We three—Ed, Murray, and John—were the original founders of the Project. We are proud of what it has accomplished: the careers it has helped launch, the friendships it has nurtured, the research it has fostered, the example of collegiality across age, background, and profession that it has sustained.

If you've attended the Universe, you know that there is no other program like it in the world, with its high level of scholarship and mixed audience of all ages and backgrounds. If you've never attended before, we hope you'll join us this year and experience "California's best-kept literary secret."

To continue our good work, we need your help. Your past gifts have enabled us to bring world-renowned speakers and provide enrichment activities at the Universe. You have helped us nurture the next generation of scholars through our Winter Conference, our California Community College Scholarship, and our High School Essay Contest.

We are also building an endowment that will help to secure our future. At the 2014 Dickens Universe, we announced our plan to build the endowment to one million dollars over the next four years in order to make the Dickens Project a permanent fixture at UCSC. Already many loyal Universe faculty and participants have responded to the call. We are well over halfway to meeting our goal, and you can help us get there. With a gift to the Endowment, your money goes even farther by creating income that will sustain the Dickens Project for many years to come.

The easiest way for you to donate money is by credit card on the secure UCSC Foundation page. You can also write a check, made out to UCSC Foundation (with a notation that it is for the Dickens Project), and mail it to the Dickens Project at 1156 High Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95064.

We're asking you to dig a little deeper this year and give a bit more. Our need is great, but we think you'll agree that our value as one of the most successful public humanities programs in the country is even greater. The best way for you to insure that the Dickens Project will continue well into the 21st century is to make a generous contribution to the Friends.

Faithfully yours,

John Jordan, Director
