The Dickens Universe 2009
Taking the Universe for UCSC Credit
LTEL 170F (UCSC Summer Session II, Special Program)
Undergraduates and high school seniors can register through UCSC Summer Session
and receive 5 units of British Literature, GUARANTEED to transfer to all UC
campuses. Directions for both UCSC and non-UCSC students are available on the
Summer Session web site.
Undergraduates from other schools may also enroll but should check with their
home campus about transferability of credits. Non-UCSC students need to pay
a non-refundable $25 fee for a UCSC log-in prior to enrolling.
The program fee of $600 covers all the Dickens Universe activities as well
as a course fee. Housing, etc. is available at an additional cost through the
Dickens Project. If you require on-campus housing during that week, please
contact the Dickens Project. Students may also purchase parking permits and
meal cards for the week.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
You will be taking part in a special course that is just one facet of the 29th
Annual Dickens Universe, which is the premier gathering for Dickens scholars
from around the world. In addition to faculty and graduates from UC campuses
and 26 other universities, participants include members of the general public
as well as Elderhostelers and a few high school students. Most programs and
activities take place at Kresge College.
The schedule for the week is very
intense and you're expected to attend the following lectures and activities:

Seminar for undergraduates 1:30 - 3:00
Evening lectures MON, TUE, and THU
You must read the novel prior to the class:
Latest Penguin edition of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
(If this isn't available, please use an edition that contains all the original
illustrations by Phiz.)
In addition, Prof. Jordan highly recommends that you read Jane Smiley's biography
of Charles Dickens.
There is a 5-7 page paper due no later than Aug. 17,
2009. The title of your
paper needs to submitted no later than Tue Aug 11. Details about the paper
and submission will be given to you in class. If enrollment is too large for
one seminar, another concurrent seminar will be added and it's possible your
instructor would be another faculty member.
Because you're attending a summer conference, "B" parking permits
and meal cards are available to you for the week. Parking is $27, lunch M-F
is $55, and dinner M-F is $60. You can also pay cash at the Dining Hall for
individual meals. If you need campus housing for 6 nts, the cost is $465 to
share a bedroom or $650 to have the bedroom to yourself. That cost includes
all meals and parking.
