TAKING THE UNIVERSE FOR CREDIT
(Continuing Education credit now available for teachers!)
LTEL 170F (UCSC Summer Session II, Special Program)
Undergraduates and high school seniors can register through
UCSC Summer Session and receive 5 units
of British Literature, GUARANTEED to transfer to all UC campuses. Directions
for both UCSC and non-UCSC students are available on the Summer Session
web site.
Undergraduates from other schools may also enroll but should check with
their home campus about transferability of credits. Non-UCSC students
need to pay a non-refundable $25 fee for a UCSC log-in prior to enrolling.
The
program fee of $550 covers all the Dickens Universe activities as well
as a
course
fee.
Housing,
etc.
is
available at an additional cost through the Dickens Project. If you
require on-campus housing during
that week, please contact the Dickens Project. Students may also purchase
parking permits and meal cards for the week.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
You must Hard Times and Gaskell's Mary Barton ahead of time.
In addition, Jane Smiley's biography of Charles Dickens is highly recommended.
Summer Session students will take a special workshop with Professor John Jordan
(UCSC) Monday - Thursday afternoons at 1:30. In addition, you must attend
the following:
Evening Lectures 7:30 - 9:00pm Sun, Mon, Tue
All morning activities 8:30 am - 12:30 pm M-F
Summer Session workshop 1:30 - 3:00 M-F
Optional activities:
Afternoon lectures 3:45 - 5:00 M-Th (after tea)
Friday evening entertainment and Dessert Party 6:30 - 10:00
Required Paper -- by August 5 you must submit
the title of your paper to John Jordan at UCSC. A completed
5-7 page paper must be received by Prof. Jordan no later than August
11. Discussion and paper topics will be made available on this site later.
You will receive a grade and narrative evaluation.
IMPORTANT
Please be aware that you are required to register Sunday afternoon July
27 and attend sessions begininng with that evening's lecture. Your attendance
is required through Friday morning. This is a special program with a
unique and intensive schedule.

UCSC EXTENSION CREDIT FOR TEACHERS
Great news! We have just been approved to offer 5 units of in-service
credit for teachers through the Education Dept. of UC Extension. Forms
for enrollment and payment will be available at the Dickens Universe.
The cost for 2008 is only $100 (cheap!).
