conferencesThe Dickens Project sponsors scholarly conferences, institutes, and public presentations throughout the year. Chief among these is a week-long gathering known as the Dickens Universe. Held every year at the beginning of August on the beautiful UC Santa Cruz campus, the Dickens Universe brings together scholars, graduate students, high school teachers, and members of the general public for a week of study and Dickensian conviviality. The 2008 Dickens Universe will feature Dickens's Hard Times and Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton. In conjunction with the Dickens Universe, the Project holds an adjunct scholarly conference on a related topic. International in scope and multidisciplinary in focus, the adjunct conference addresses wider issues in Victorian literature and culture. Next summer the topic will be "Collaborations." The Dickens Project holds an annual conference for graduate students each winter or spring. In 2008, the conference was held in February at the Davis campus of the University of California. Additionally, the Project regularly organizes summer seminars and institutes for teachers. In addition to conferences held in California, the Dickens Project regularly co-sponsors international conferences. Conference locations have included France, Italy, and South Africa. In July 2002 a conference called "Boundaries" was held at the University of Exeter in England. A volume of papers delivered at the conference is planned. In 2004 a conference took place in Sydney, Australia, titled "Antipodes." Genoa, Italy was the site of the conference titled "Dickens, Victorian Culture, Italy," in June, 2007. The next international conference will take place in Jersualem in 2009. A Call For Papers has been issued. |
